Featured Projects: Boss Salt Spreader Controller

Boss Controller

It was a pleasure for Wilson Hurd to work with Boss Products to create a controller for the interior of vehicles which are used for snow removal. The purpose of this device is to control the salt spreader positioned at the tailgate of the truck.

Boss Salt Spreader

The original control design was very plain and didn’t have the element of style and allure that Boss was looking for. They were seeking a controller that would reflect the appeal of cutting-edge equipment and technology that would be in line with the rest of the Boss product line. We worked directly with the designers at Boss Products to figure out what should differ in the new controller to attain the desired look. The Boss team liked many of the ideas we presented to them during a visit to our Corporate Headquarters in Wausau. After working out the details of the end-product, the new panel design was created which incorporated the backlit keys and plastic backpanel.

The backlighting and functional elastomeric keypad was perfect for this project as it allowed for drivers to not only see the controller in the dark, but made it easy to the find each of the individual switches and operate the spreader by the feel of the raised keys on the elastomeric panel.

The components of this device are as follows:

  • Membrane Switch Assembly with Metal Domes
  • Elastomeric Overlay with Matte Polyurethane Finish
  • Printed Circuit Board Assembly
  • Plastic Backpanel

Overall, the project was a success. We were able to find the ideal solution to accommodate for Boss’ specific needs.

Gold Mirrored Point-of-Purchase Displays

Wilson-Hurd’s POP division has exhibited their strong creative abilities and aptitude to produce captivating, in-demand merchandise with this gold mirrored stand and sign. Any company looking for something that will pop out and demand attention may find that the process used on these two items may be what they seek in their next point-of-purchase design.  Both of these items were created using a technique where Pantone Matching System was used on aluminum to color-match it with a brown/gold hue.

The two items were made using the components below.

For the flat piece with edge banding:

  • Clear acrylic on top a digital print, multi-layered wood grain surface
  • Gold Lettering – Laser cut “Wilson Hurd” applied to Printed Acrylic with pressure sensitive adhesive
  • Gold Edge Banding made from Cosmetic Brite aluminum which is coated and die cut to size, then secured to the border

For the stand piece:

  • Laser cut gold mirror base
  • Laser cut gold mirror letters “Wilson Hurd” adhered to aluminum
  • Clear laser cut acrylic solvent bonded for standoff and structure
  • Cosmetic bright aluminum with 1 screen pass for color and folded into shape of display
  • Black styrene attached to aluminum to stiffen and build thicker edge

All the parts of the displays were assembled in a manner that creates a free standing look of the aluminum floating.

Featured Project: Hydrogels & Their Use in the Medical Industry

Hydrogels are gel-like substances that have the capacity to hold water in their structure.  They can be created by mixing polymers and water then exposing it to an electronic beam or chemically through a combination of cross-linking. Hydrogels can be customized for various transdermal applications, to address the treatment of wounds, as well as the delivery of numerous drugs or other agents for pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries

Hydrogel 1Hydrogels can be used in a variety of applications, including:

  • Medical diagnostics
  • Tissue engineering and regeneration
  • Drug delivery
  • Components for medical devices
  • Temperature management

Wilson-Hurd has the capability to use hydrogel in our medical contract manufacturing division.  Examples of medical devices that can utilize hydrogels are: printed sensors for respiratory monitoring and disposable printed electrodes for EKG sensor arrays. Hydrogels have certain advantages when used in disposable medical applications. The hydrogels easily adhere to the skin, allowing for zero prep time with the patient. It also possesses a degree of flexibility similar to natural tissue, and it is highly absorbent as it contains over 90 percent water.

Featured Project: Wilson-Hurd POP Video Display

Wilson-Hurd’s POP division in Berlin, WI, had the task of designing a video display to showcase our skills and abilities for the GlobalShop 2015 show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The challenge was to develop a display that demonstrated our capabilities and was also appealing and memorable to people walking by our booth.

Video Display 4

The POP team designed and manufactured the display shown above in its entirety and used a variety of materials and processes including:

  • Screen and digital printing on both aluminum and polycarbonate
  • Aluminum fabrication
  • Laser cutting of acrylic
  • LED light insertion
  • Motion sensing
  • Final assembly of display

The video monitor within the display features the actual production of the display and is powered on by motioning your hand above the screen. The LED lights are battery powered and have an on/off toggle switch.

Video Display 3

“Typical POP display projects using video monitors have proven to increase product sales between 35% to 50%,” said David Bono, Eastern Regional Sales Manager. “A lot of companies can supply video monitors, but only Wilson-Hurd can do it all under one roof. We’ll provide printed items, LED’s, monitors, and customer circuit boards with motion sensors, and then assemble it all in our facility. This gives the customer greater control for a superior product at a competitive price.”
